HEliX Internal Communications for Colleges

A well informed and engaged staff community is essential for sustaining college excellence. Engaged staff are more innovative, more productive and they advocate more readily - so boosting reputation.

HEliX is the evaluation and benchmarking system for good practice in internal communications for the education sector. Originally funded by HEFCE, the system has been adapted and tested for use in further education in association with the Lancashire Principals’ Group.

The framework has 35 indicators of best practice organised into eight sections. There is a specification supporting each indicator:

  • Goals, Ambitions and Character
  • Leadership
  • Strategy, Accountability and Evaluation
  • News and Message Dissemination
  • Information Sharing
  • Campus Space and Collegiality
  • Crisis, Safety and Security
  • The Employee Journey

There are two tools that can be used to review your internal communications activity:

Healthcheck is a spreadsheet based tool designed for use by senior managers (e.g. communications or personal manager or vice principal, etc) as a simple means of self evaluation.

The 4-strand survey is a suite of questionnaires that deliver an online staff evaluation, with specific questions for different types of staff.

The Knowledge Partnership provides support services associated with these methods and can undertaken a full independent review of your staff communications and engagement
